Returned…With a Few Stories

Ok, so family emergency has passed for the time being. I won’t go into too much detail. Now, for what happened the last few days:

Wednesday was the Halloween party bash with my coworkers to celebrate our company and artistic awesomeness. Unfortunately, I did not get pictures, and I did not get pictures of my own costume (but trust me when I say I was a fabulous fashionable ninja).

Thursday was driving down home for four and a half hours. I love car rides and road trips, especially across Ohio, because it feels like you’re moving from one world into another: from familiarity into the unknown, from the routine to the surprise, etc.

Unfortunately, while I was home, there were supposed fleas in the house, so mom had to flea-bomb the place. The cats DID NOT LIKE US after that. They’ve been growling and hissing for the past two days, probably because the house smells like chemical and not like the house at all.

Then came the visiting of the family in crisis, and then there was today.

Before I drove up, my older sister, her husband, mom, and I hung out for a bit (because, you know, how often do you see your sister who lives in South Carolina when you live in Ohio?). In the process of hanging out, we got to the topic of dreams, where Kristen shared a bizarre recurring dream she had been having for a while, which she liked to call, “The Clown.”

In “The Clown,” usually what happened was a nightmare of some sort, such as being shot at in a war, fighting the cheeseburger army, being trapped in a room slowly filling with water, etc. Well, there would come a point in the dream where Kristen would be alert enough to go, “…Wait a minute…This is a dream!” And after every time she made this revelation, without fail, a clown would appear out of nowhere (if a war dream, usually coming out of a foxhole, for instance), hand her a red balloon, and say, “Congratulations. You are correct.”

Then she would wake up and say, “THE F**K?”

So of course I made a doodle of her dream.

Why can’t MY nightmares be like that? Seriously, I want a clown who wakes me up!

Come to think of it, this sounds very Little Nemo-like. In that comic, Flip the clown would appear in front of Nemo wearing a hat that said “Wake Up!” And then Nemo would wake up.

I dunno. Just a thought.

Anywho, I’m going to head out for now and do some grocery shopping and get started on some projects I’ve been holding off on for too long.

Emergency Situation!

So I’m going down home tomorrow, Friday, and Saturday due to a family emergency. I don’t want to go into details, but it’s really important that I go down because I might not see this person ever again.

To that end, I’m debating if I want to postpone updating this blog until I get back, or if I should get some posts ready to update while I’m gone because of my promise to post something new on this blog everyday. I’m still trying to figure this out.

I’ll think about it as I pack my bags.

Late Post is Good Post: or, Becoming Inspired

I suppose you could say there would be two blog updates in one day, since I’m making this entry after midnight, but details shmetails.

This morning my brain went all “herp” and decided not to do anything comics or work-related, so I took a break and read some books. Recently I’ve been reading Epileptic by David B., and it’s wonderfully unique! It’s a French graphic memoir about the author’s childhood and the memories he has of his epileptic older brother. The art is so wonderfully storybook-like that it was refreshing to read.

I’m only one fourth of the way into the book, but I already love it.

It was from this book, and some henna designs I’ve been eyeballing recently for an illustration I have in progress, that I had a Eureka! moment tonight. So now I’m on a creative burst again!

It just goes to prove that all I need to recharge my imagination is a distraction.

I’ll update again in the morning-ish before I go to work. Tomorrow is also a Halloween-in-June party hosted by my coworkers, so I’ll do my best to get pictures to share with you all!

As always, Don’t Forget to Be Awesome. :D

Artists You Should See!

I was going through some messages in my deviantART page, looking through some posts made by several groups I’m a member of, when I discovered these lovely artists you should check out! They are:

arienzio, who does lovely digital portraits.

mistytang, and her wonderful digital work.

asahikawa-arashi, who makes surprisingly good yaoi illustrations. I normally don’t like yaoi, but something about the way she colors with markers attracts my eye.

You should check those people out! And if you have any other artists you think people should look at more, leave their names and URLs in the comments. I look forward to being exposed to more work!

Current Works-In-Progress

Right, so after Friday at Colossal Con (the post about it is here) I was artistically inspired because I wanted to make work that I could be proud of that could be on par with the ladies I had the pleasure to meet with in the Artist Alley. (I am aware that sentence was long-winded: I just got done watching a string of vlogbrothers videos and they talk a lot like that and it rubbed off on me. Please forgive me).

So to that end, I started some new projects! Here is just one of them in progress:

I intend for this to be a watercolor and ink type of drawing with some splashes of color in the background. We shall see how this progresses!

I’m also working on the first set of pages for a doujinshi I’m collaborating on with the lovely Chloe (aka neofeliss). You should check out her stuff if you haven’t already because it’s unbearably cute and good.

While I’m also working on improving my caricaturing style (because lately I’ve been in a slump and I need to get out of it), I’m still making some time to also fill up some sketchbook pages with some doodles. This one is filled with some of my favorite villains:

The top left one is a miscellaneous character from the top of my head, and the man who takes up a large chunk of the middle is my own personal interpretation of Dracula. Can you recognize the rest? :3

I’m trying to make a point to fill all of my sketchbook pages all the way to the edge as 1) kind of a personal challenge, and 2) because nothing is more obnoxious to me than white space that’s not being used in a sketchbook. I’m always like, “Grr! I could have drawn a cat/face/cell phone dancing/etc!”

So those are some of the things I’ve got going on in progress right now. For those of you who have noticed, this update falls on a not-Saturday! That’s because I made a different sort of challenge for myself and that is:

I plan to update this blog everyday until the end of June.

Topics will vary, but I intend to post many more works-in-progress and hopefully entertain you all with my terrible grammar. Because terrible grammar is MY THING! Like John Green’s thing is mispronouncing foreign words!

So I’m going to get back to drawing, but as I try to remind you all, Don’t Forget to Be Awesome!
