There Is No “Right Way” To Be a Working Creative

I have returned on YouTube with a new, short video. This time, it’s all about why there is no “right way” to be creative.

Here’s the thing – we know the starving artist stereotype. And we know the stereotype of the “sell-out” artist. So I hope that this video with my thoughts on the matter helps give a little clarity.

At the very least, you’ll know this: what works for one person doesn’t always work for another.

It’s actually hilarious that I finished this video, in which I mention having a full-time office job. Because I just turned in my notice. My last day at this office is June 30.

After that? I’m returning to being a full-time creative.

I’m doing this for my own health – the office was (and is) hugely transphobic, the HR department is shit, there are no benefits, and the job no longer serves me. The place is awful, and I can earn my living through other means.

Like Ko-Fi, commissions, and the Fan Clubs (shameless plugs).

Honestly, this works for me. Quitting a day job may not be the thing for you right now. And if you’re unable to do so, man do I get that HARD. I wasn’t able to quit this one until recently. So I get it. Hang in there, my dude-erinos.

I hope you found this video useful in some way.

Thanks for watching!

How I Use Trello As A Comic Book Artist

Today, I’ll show you how I use Trello to track and manage all of my comics and projects!

I have been using Trello for two years now. It has been an absolute game-changer for me and how I organize my projects. If you’ve ever wondered how I’m able to make so many comics, give this a watch.

Members of my Art Club saw this video before it became public. If you would like to get early access to tutorials (and club-only downloads), join on my Subscribe page.

Ok, more shameless plugs time: you can read my webcomics, The Legend of Jamie Roberts AND Vanita and the Demon King online. Some other things I do, though, will be on hiatus. Here’s my update schedule for May.

Oh! If you’re in Toledo, OH, I’m at Toledo Game Room tomorrow (May 6) for Free Comic Book Day! I’ll have discounted merch and other cool stuff.

That’s all for now. Thanks for bearing with me and my shameless plugs. I gotta get back to packing boxes for Free Comic Book Day and the upcoming move.

Thank you for watching and reading!

LIVE STREAM – Drawing and Vibing

On Feb 5 at 1 pm EST, I’m gonna draw…stuff. Let’s just vibe while we draw.

Keep an eye on this blog for a special announcement. I made a short comic for an anthology project, and it launches for crowdfunding tomorrow! More details to come.

In the meantime, let’s just draw, vibe, and chat.

That’s all for now. Thank you for watching!

The Worst Books I Read in 2022

Today, I talk about the worst books I read in 2022. There are novels, comics, and nonfiction books, but they all have one thing in common – I REALLY did not like them. Watch to find out why. All while I draw a page for my webcomic, The Legend of Jamie Roberts.

On a lighter note, check out my chat with Columbus Cartoon Coalition, talking about my favorite comics in 2022.

To karmically balance everything, I’ll do a follow-up video talking about my favorite books from 2022. Soon…
