After-Con and Chris Oatley

Oh my god Youmacon was a blast! Steam Powered Giraffe was AMAZING and I LOVE Hatchworth and the Spine and Rabbit and ALL THE FANGIRL SQUEALS–sorry I got a little excited there. Really, they were all very sweet people, and very huggable. Seriously, I hugged each and every band member, including the drummer. The drummer hugged me so big he lifted me off the ground a little! I was so excited I forgot to get a picture with them, but you know, I got my CD autographed by everybody and they all gave me hugs. That’s WAY better than a picture, I feel like.

And at the con I got SO MUCH NERD GEAR. Now I have Steam Powered Giraffe buttons and wrist-bands, an ocarina, a bajillion posters, more buttons, and new T-shirts! I’ll post pictures here soon, but I shared a few on my Tumblr if you dig through all the posts (sorry, I reblog like a fiend): magicallikethat.tumblr.com if you’re interested.

I even got to meet some sweet artists! Donald McCoullough was a sweety and his art is SO DROOL-WORTHY. Check it out here: donworks.tumblr.com

Also Comfort and Adam were really nice. They even signed the Doctor Who and Rainbow in the Dark posters I got! Their comics look pretty sweet, though I haven’t had the chance to read them yet. You can check them out here: comfortandadam.com

DauntingFire is someone I didn’t get a chance to really meet in person–every time I got to their table they disappeared. But their art is FABULOUS.

AND ZZYZZYY! OMG she’s such a nice lady! And her Hunter x Hunter fanart I saw got us both talking. She’s an awesome person. Thankfully she has a deviantART, so check out her stuff! Follow her! She needs, nay, DESERVES, more love.

Wow, this blog post turned into a link mash-up pretty quickly.

BEFORE I FORGET! I also wanted to share this…Chris Oatley, a super-sweet dude who works for Disney as a concept artist/illustrator, is going to do portfolio critiques this Saturday. If you’d like to register and get your portfolio looked at (WHICH YOU SHOULD), you can go here: [link] I know I’m getting my portfolio looked at, even though I just make comics. You don’t have to be in or interested in getting into animation if you want him to see your stuff, though it might help.

KEEP IN MIND, though, that he has a limited number of spots. He’ll try and get to as many as he can, but he’s only one guy. The session’s going to last for a few hours, at least, so that gives him time to look at a lot of people’s work.

The deadline for sending in portfolios is tomorrow at 11 am Pacific Time. If you’re in the Midwest like me, that means at least 1 or 2 pm EST. I know that’s sudden, but it’ll be worth it. Trust me.

Ok, that’s it for now!

OH! And my webcomic “The Legend of Jamie Roberts” is STILL coming out this Saturday! Expect the first post early in the morning, though, because I have to work at my day-job that day. I’m currently making some last-minute tweaks to the website–I want this to be fabulous. <3

Don’t Forget to Be Awesome!

I’m Off to See The Wizard…

The wonderful wizards of YOUMACON, BITCHES!

Ok, you’re not bitches. You’re awesome. Seriously.

Anyway, yes! This weekend I am off to Youmacon up in Detroit, Michigan! Keep an eye on my Twitter feed, because I intend on tweeting lots while I’m there. Convention pictures will also be tweeted. ;D

In other news, my NEW webcomic, The Legend of Jamie Roberts, is going to be released on November 10th over at SmackJeeves! A link will be provided closer to the release date. In the meantime, enjoy this teaser image of the finished cover art:

Isn’t it so pretty? I’m so seriously excited and proud to present this work! This has been my baby for years and I’m so excited to finally release it!

The story is about Jamie Roberts, a girl who disguises herself as a man to join the military school, so she can become a hero like her childhood idol, Queen Norsa. However, Jamie and her two best friends, Daniel and Thomas, discover that their nation is up to no good, and they flee the country to another one in the South. In this Southern country of Corith, they are taught by a wise dragon so they can return home and restore peace to their nation.

And there is cross-dressing and dragons and dancing galore!

So again: Youmacon on the Twitter page, and The Legend of Jamie Roberts releasing November 10th!

Problem Solving in Action

So in the process of making the cover art for my webcomic’s first chapter, I came across a problem:

I liked the inks…but I didn’t know how to color it. And the background? I had no idea what to do with it.

So, to work my way through it, I got another piece of paper and made these sketches:

I would call these “color keys” because I’m tinkering around with colors to see what works best in the compositions. I knew I wanted to keep the girl in the right in a blue uniform, because that uniform color was decided on LONG before I started the cover. I was figuring out the dress color for the girl on the right, and what to do with the background.

And looking at these, I’m going to go with the thumbnail on the bottom. The girl’s dress pops noticeably enough, but more importantly, the girl in uniform doesn’t disappear into the background. And the background is noticeably cool, but not distracting.

So voila! That’s just a little snippet of my work progress in action for all you lovely peeps who might be stuck on projects of your own.

Don’t Forget to Be Awesome, and I will see you again soon!

Having a Mild Panic Attack, brb.

Oh shit.

Ok, so I’ve been planning on making a compilation of the comics I made during my final semester at college, right? So I was editing the pages in photoshop and I discovered…

None of my pages are adequately sized for printing.

They crop weird.

And they’re JUST THE WRONG SIZE.

Excuse me while I freak out and then brainstorm how to get out of this mess.

In the meantime, I shall work on some cover arts and commissions I promised to make for peeps. It’s usually worked where I have a problem with one project, so I work on another, and it gives me a fresh perspective on the first project’s problems. I hope that’s true this time.

My Walls Are Thoroughly Decorated

Indeed, I spent most of my day decorating my walls, as these super grainy phone pictures shall prove:

I believe a good desk space should have lots of posters around it to inspire you and pin things onto it to keep you interested.

However, I DID also apply for work at the Mall AND got the number of the special services coordinator of the mall: turns out there used to be a guy who drew caricatures there on the weekends, during the holidays, but he hadn’t drawn there for a few years. I believe it’s my time to step in and do that service. :3

I still have to call the guy tomorrow and see what happens.

Also sent emails to peeps. It’s important to follow-up with the pros that you talk to, and this past year I was REALLY bad at that! I want to improve and follow-up IMMEDIATELY from now on.

Cooking dinner now: fried chicken and a baked potato. After that I’ll start drawing the covers for the webcomic and the anthology I’m planning out. No rest for the comic artist.

On the other hand, I hope to skype with some friends this Friday. I’ll start asking around. :3

Don’t Forget to Be Awesome, and I will post again tomorrow!
