It started out as a joke.
Christian and I were interviewed by Eddie for his radio show In My Honest Opinion. (Click here to listen. It’s a lot of fun!)
During this show the phrase “Thoughtful Dinosaur” came up, and Christian said, “That would make a great webcomic.”
Here’s the thing: It’s not the first time she’s said this – when the both of us are at conventions or even just chatting on Facebook, one or the both of us will say some two- to three-word statement, like “Popcorn Chicken” or “Thoughtful Dinosaur,” and then Christian would say (you guessed it), “That would make a great webcomic.”
I know it’s a joke, but sometimes it’s a little annoying to me (and Christian knows it).
Fast forward from the interview to just last week. I was on Twitter chatting with some new readers when we started talking about dinosaurs. One said…
@GentlemanViking Thank glob for @AbbyHoward @KelciDCrawford & @beranek right? When will the industry fix Dinosaur Representation in comics?

To which I said…
@GentlemanViking @MxHarryBentley @beranek give me four weeks and a Sketchbook. ;)

My original idea was to make a sketchbook full of dinosaur sketches to post up on Gumroad. BUT THEN…
Yes. Thoughtful Dinosaur popped up.
And I was COMPELLED to write a story.
That’s what I’ve been doing for the past week – writing out a story about a Thoughtful Dinosaur.
I can’t go into too many specifics about it yet, since it’s still in the rough draft phase of creating (and the rough draft phase is the most experimental, free-flowing, and senseless stage of producing work). What I CAN say is…
- It takes place in Fantasyville,
- It’s actually going to draw a LOT from my own personal experiences, especially in the post-college years of life.
- There will be many types of velociraptors.
- There will a T-rex. My goal for this story is to have a T-rex type at a computer, like so…
It will be silly! There’s also going to be some existential crises and thoughts about the meaning of life and whether we are defined by our work or by our character or even if there’s a distinction between those definitions – ALL WITH DINOSAURS.
I’ll be posting more sketches here and on my various feeds (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Deviantart) as the story is being worked on.
I hope you’re looking forward to it!
Thank you for reading.
You. Are. Awesome.
