Here’s Day 1 of Monster Madness, the challenge to draw one new monster every day during the month of March.
This is similar to the Inktober challenge I did in October, which resulted in Witches: The Sketchbook. However, this time I’m doing monsters.
There’s a lot of reasons why I want to draw monsters during March: there are comics coming up (like The Legend of Jamie Roberts) that will have monster designs in them, and I want to warm-up my monster-drawing chops so I can do a good job.
Another thing: I would like to see more nature-based monsters. Lots of monster designs are animal- or human-based, but I’m going to challenge myself to draw more monsters out of scenery (like the one above), or based on dreams.
Speaking of dreams, I talked about this a little before in other blog posts, but I’ll say it clearly here: I’m currently grappling with a lot of anxiety. It’s not bad enough to require medication, but on a bad day, my anxiety can keep me from doing anything kind to myself or others. It’s mostly not social anxiety. However, my brain loves to cook up doomsday scenarios and expect the worst.
Because of this, my anxiety looks like a different type of monster every day. I’m hoping that this creative exercise can help get these anxieties out of my head and onto paper.
So look forward to a new monster sketch every day. I’ll be posting these sketches here on the blog, on Facebook, and on Tumblr.
That’s all for now. Thank you for reading!
You. Are. Awesome.
